QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BOOK
Kenya Safari Planning FAQs
Answers to common questions travellers ask before choosing a safari.
The cost of a private Kenya safari depends on your itinerary, accommodation, transport, park entrance fees and travel season. Private safaris offer greater flexibility because the vehicle and schedule are arranged for your travelling party. Staying in comfortable safari camps or lodges generally costs more than choosing simpler accommodation, while popular travel periods can affect availability and rates.
The best way to plan your budget is to choose your preferred destinations, travel dates and accommodation style, then request a tailored quotation with a clear breakdown of inclusions and additional expenses. https://kws.go.ke/faq-items/how-much-does-a-safari-to-kenya-cost/
Kenya offers safari experiences throughout the year, but the best time depends on your destination and wildlife interests. The drier periods generally offer favourable wildlife-viewing conditions because vegetation is less dense and animals may gather around available water sources.
The rainy seasons bring greener landscapes and can make some park roads more challenging, particularly after heavy rainfall. They can also appeal to travellers interested in scenery, birdlife and quieter travel periods.
For the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, wildlife movements vary with rainfall and grazing conditions, so sightings and river crossings cannot be guaranteed on specific dates. Amboseli, Tsavo and other parks offer wildlife experiences beyond the migration season. https://kws.go.ke/faq-items/what-is-the-weather-pattern-in-kenya-when-is-the-best-time-to-visit-your-parks-and-reserves/
Yes. Watamu and Mombasa are practical starting points for exploring Kenya's southern safari circuit. Tsavo East is accessible from the coast, while Tsavo West and Taita Hills can also feature in itineraries depending on your route and travel plans.
Travellers with more time can extend their journey towards Amboseli and other inland destinations. Your route should account for driving times, park access, accommodation and the time available for game drives.
Starting from the coast also makes it possible to combine a wildlife safari with a beach holiday in Watamu, Malindi or Mombasa. https://kws.go.ke/park/tsavo-east-national-park/ https://tourkenya.go.ke/tourism/circuits/southern-circuit-2/
The ideal safari length depends on how many destinations you want to visit and how much time you would like to spend exploring each park.
A shorter safari works well for a focused visit to destinations such as Tsavo East or Taita Hills. A longer itinerary allows you to explore several parks, experience different landscapes and enjoy more game drives without spending as much of your holiday travelling between destinations.
If you are combining the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli and Tsavo, allow enough time for road transfers as well as wildlife viewing. Your itinerary should balance the number of destinations with a comfortable pace.
De Rossi Tours & Safaris focuses on helping travellers plan personalised Kenya safari experiences, including arrangements starting from Nairobi and the Kenyan coast. A private safari allows your travelling party to enjoy a dedicated vehicle and greater flexibility when planning the itinerary.
The available vehicle arrangements depend on the specific safari and booking. Contact De Rossi to confirm the arrangements available for your preferred dates and group.
Inclusions vary by itinerary, accommodation and safari operator. A package may include transport in a safari vehicle, a driver-guide, park or reserve entrance fees, accommodation, meals and drinking water during game drives.
Some itineraries may also include airport or hotel transfers and selected activities. Domestic flights, alcoholic drinks, tips, travel insurance and optional excursions may be charged separately.
Before booking, check the itinerary carefully to confirm which park fees, meals, transfers and activities are covered. Your quotation should clearly identify any exclusions or additional costs.
Absolutely. Combining a safari with a beach holiday is a wonderful way to experience different sides of Kenya in one trip.
You could begin with wildlife viewing in Tsavo East or Taita Hills before relaxing on the beaches of Watamu or Malindi. Travellers with more time can consider extending their safari to Amboseli or other inland destinations before finishing along the Indian Ocean coast.
Your route will depend on where you arrive, how long you have available and whether you prefer to begin or end your holiday at the beach.
Each destination offers a different safari experience, so the best choice depends on your interests.
Masai Mara: Well known for its open savannah, predators and the seasonal movements of wildebeest and zebras associated with the Great Migration.
Amboseli: Particularly appealing for its large elephant herds, open landscapes and views of Mount Kilimanjaro when conditions are clear.
Tsavo East: Offers expansive semi-arid landscapes, diverse wildlife and the distinctive red-dust scenery associated with the park.
Tsavo West: Combines varied terrain, volcanic landscapes and attractions such as Mzima Springs.
If you are travelling from Watamu or Mombasa, Tsavo East and Taita Hills may be convenient choices for a shorter safari. If you have more time, combining several destinations can provide a broader view of Kenya's wildlife and landscapes. https://tourkenya.go.ke/wildlife-safaris/ https://kws.go.ke/park/amboseli-national-park/ https://kws.go.ke/park/tsavo-east-national-park/
