Kenya Safari Planning Guide for First-Time Visitors

Planning a first Kenya safari is mostly about making a few good decisions early: where to start, how many parks to combine, how much time to allow for road transfers and where your holiday should end. This guide explains the choices that have the biggest impact on the experience.

Start with Your Arrival Point

Your arrival point shapes the most efficient safari. Nairobi is best for Masai Mara, the Rift Valley, Samburu and Ol Pejeta. Watamu, Malindi and Mombasa are practical starting points for Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Taita Hills and Amboseli.

Choose Fewer Parks, Better

A strong safari is not a race to collect destination names. If you have three days from Watamu, Tsavo East alone can be more rewarding than forcing several long transfers. With a week or more, park combinations become more comfortable.

Decide Your Safari Style

Private 4×4 travel gives greater control over departure times, stops and photography. Shared departures can reduce cost when they are available, but they require more compromise around pickup and group preferences.

Match Accommodation to the Route

Location often matters more than luxury. A well-positioned lodge can reduce driving time and give you more time for wildlife. Ask whether each property is inside a park, near a gate or in a private conservancy.

Build in Realistic Transfer Times

Road travel is part of many Kenyan safaris. Avoid itineraries that advertise too many distant parks without allowing time for check-in, meals and game drives.

Finish at the Coast

If you plan a Watamu beach stay, ask whether your safari can end there instead of returning to Nairobi. Open-jaw routing is one of the most efficient ways to combine safari and beach.
