Robinson Island is one of the most fascinating places on the northern coast of Kenya. Located near Mambrui, approximately 20–30 minutes from Malindi, this small sand island appears and changes shape with the rhythm of the tides, creating a landscape reminiscent of a true tropical paradise.
The History and the Name
The name “Robinson Island” recalls the famous character Robinson Crusoe and the idea of a deserted island. In reality, it is not an inhabited island: it is a natural sandbank formed where the Sabaki River meets the Indian Ocean. Every day, the tides change its size and shape, making it different each time.
The waters are generally calm and shallow during low tide, making them ideal for a refreshing swim.
Sailing on a Traditional Dhow
The boat transfer is part of the charm of the tour and offers beautiful views of the lagoon and the mangroves.
Visiting the Mambrui Dunes
Many tours combine Robinson Island with the spectacular golden dunes, a rare landscape on the Kenyan coast.
Swahili Lunch
Lobster, prawns, octopus and fresh fish are often prepared on the beach using traditional local recipes.
09:00 – Boarding a dhow boat and crossing the Sabaki River lagoon.
09:30–12:00 – Free time on the island: swimming, walks and relaxation.
12:30 – Traditional Swahili lunch (if included).
14:00 – Visit to the Mambrui dunes and return to Malindi.
The Best Time to Go
The ideal time is during low tide, when the sandbank emerges completely. For this reason, the tour time changes every day according to the tides.
